Tax Atlas

About Tax Atlas

Free, accurate income tax calculators built for people who earn across borders.

What Tax Atlas is

Tax Atlas is a free income tax calculator covering the US, UK, India, Canada, Australia, and more. You enter a gross income, select a country and filing status, and instantly see your take-home pay, total tax, effective rate, and a bracket-by-bracket breakdown — no account required, no data collected. It is built for individuals, freelancers, expats, and digital nomads who need accurate estimates without navigating complex government websites or creating accounts on country-specific tax portals.

The philosophy behind Tax Atlas is simple: tax data is public, the math is deterministic, and there is no good reason it should cost money or require personal information to run a calculation. Every result runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere. The brackets and thresholds come from official government sources — the IRS, HMRC, India's Income Tax Department, the CRA, and the ATO. Every country page is reviewed by a credentialed tax professional in that jurisdiction. What you see is as accurate as we can make it, and we tell you exactly what is and is not included.

Why this exists

Tax Atlas was built because every existing tax calculator stops at a national border. If you freelance across multiple countries, relocate internationally, or simply want to understand what your effective rate would be somewhere else, you end up with five browser tabs open across five different tools — most of which require a signup, most of which show rates for the wrong tax year, and none of which agree with each other on the math. The few that work well are paywalled. The free ones are outdated.

The goal is a single, honest, professionally reviewed calculator that works the same way for every country it covers: same engine, same level of rigor, same transparency about sources and limitations. It is not trying to replace a tax adviser. It is trying to give you the accurate starting number so your conversation with an adviser — or your own planning — starts from a place of clarity, not guesswork.

How we keep the calculators accurate

Official sources only. Every bracket threshold, personal allowance, credit amount, and levy rate is sourced from the official tax authority in that country — IRS Revenue Procedures for the US, HMRC publications for the UK, the Income Tax Department for India, CRA tables for Canada, and ATO rate schedules for Australia. We cite the specific document on each country page; there are no third-party aggregators or unofficial summaries in the data chain.

Credentialed professional review. Every country calculator is reviewed by a tax professional credentialed in that jurisdiction before being marked final — a CPA or Enrolled Agent for the US, a Chartered Tax Adviser or ICAEW Chartered Accountant for the UK, an ICAI Chartered Accountant for India, a CPA Canada member for Canada, and a CA ANZ or CPA Australia member for Australia. The review covers bracket accuracy, country-specific features (rebates, credits, surcharges, levies), and edge-case math. Reviewer names appear at the bottom of each country page once the review is complete. See our Methodology page for full detail.

Annual updates and mid-year corrections. Each calculator is updated when the new tax year takes effect — US and Canada in January, UK and India in April, Australia in July. If a budget or finance bill changes rates mid-year, the calculator is updated within 14 days of the change taking legal effect. Errors reported by users are reviewed within 3 business days.

The team

Founder

Muhammed Abdul Kalam

Head of Digital, Muthoot Finance

I built Tax Atlas because every tax calculator I tried was either limited to one country, locked behind a signup, or out of date. None of them worked cleanly for people who earn or move across borders — so I built one.

Tax Atlas is an independent personal project. It is not affiliated with Muthoot Finance, and editorial decisions about calculator math and content are made independently of any employer relationship.

I'm a digital product leader, not a credentialed tax professional. The math on every country page is reviewed and signed off by a credentialed CPA, Chartered Accountant, or equivalent in that jurisdiction. See the Reviewers page for the full panel.

Country reviewers

Each country page is reviewed by a credentialed tax professional in that jurisdiction.

Reviewer credentials and last-review dates appear at the bottom of each country calculator page. See the Methodology page for the full review process and credential standards.

How we stay free

The core calculators are and will remain free forever. The planned revenue model is straightforward: affiliate commissions from reputable tax software (e.g. TurboTax, TaxAct, TaxScouts, ClearTax) disclosed clearly on the pages that carry them. When we recommend a product, it is because it is relevant to the country and situation on that page — not because it pays the highest commission. We may add a premium tier in future for advanced features such as saving scenarios, PDF export, or a multi-country dashboard. If that happens, the core calculators stay free.

We do not sell user data. We cannot sell what we do not collect. Calculations run in your browser; your income figures never leave your device.

Editorial independence

Affiliate relationships do not influence the calculator math. If a tax software provider pays a commission when you click through from Tax Atlas, that has no effect on which deductions appear in the calculator, how brackets are computed, or what the limitations section says. The math is sourced from government publications and reviewed by independent professionals. No commercial relationship can change it. If we ever identify a conflict of interest, we will disclose it explicitly on the relevant page.
