Frequently asked questions

How do you compare tax across countries with different currencies?
We convert your input income to each country's local currency using approximate mid-market exchange rates, then run each country's official tax calculations. Results are converted back to your chosen display currency for side-by-side comparison. The exchange rate used and its approximate date are shown below the table. For exact figures, always check current rates before making decisions.
Why does the same income show different tax burdens?
Tax systems differ fundamentally: each country has its own bracket rates, personal allowances, social contributions, and additional levies. The same nominal income — converted to local currency — falls into completely different brackets and faces different rules in each jurisdiction. Beyond taxes, cost of living, healthcare, and public services also vary enormously, which this comparison does not capture.
Are these comparisons accurate for real-life decisions?
These are accurate estimates for standard employment income under normal circumstances, with no special deductions, no investment income, and no country-specific credits beyond the defaults. They do not include healthcare costs, housing, retirement contributions, VAT, or other factors that differ across countries. Use them for planning and orientation — consult a tax professional in each jurisdiction for decisions affecting your actual situation.
Which country has the lowest income tax?
It depends heavily on income level, filing status, and what is included in the definition of tax. At lower incomes, most countries have generous exemptions. At high incomes, the ranking shifts significantly depending on social contributions, surcharges, and other levies. Enter your actual income in the comparison tool — the results will show you the ranking for your specific situation.
